There may not be much white stuff in the High Country yet, at least the real stuff, but we are picking up a little bit of snow headed to Colorado’s mountains this weekend! This is great news, as many local ski resorts will be opening up in the coming weeks, with or without Mother Nature’s cooperation. It will feel like August, not October, this week as the same old pesky ridging pattern holds across the western United States. As a result, we’ll largely see a continuation of dry and unseasonably warm weather across the Front Range as many days flirt with record high temperatures. Read on for our complete outlook of the week ahead, including discussion of when our next chance of precipitation may edge into the forecast.
For the first time in three years, La Niña conditions have developed and are expected to last through the upcoming winter. We discuss the forecast, remind you what La Niña actually is, and explain the potential impacts La Niña will have on Colorado for the rest of autumn. This week’s weather will be a delicate balance between below and above normal temperatures as the Front Range remains situated between a ridge of high pressure over the West Coast and a persistent trough in the Midwest. This should spell out pleasant and dry weather with no chances for rain/snow and day after day of sunshine.

Well, Mother Nature threw us a giant curve-ball this year with our earliest accumulating snowfall on record in Boulder and 2nd earliest in Denver back on September 8th. Thus, this year’s snowfall contest will revolve around predicting Boulder’s second snowfall event of the season, since the elusive first one was already spoiled for us! We provide a brief overview of Boulder’s early season snowfall climatology, discuss the snowfall outlook for the next week or two, and then pose a question…“When will Boulder’s SECOND measurable snow occur this year?” Submit your guess for a chance to win an assortment of prizes. Those who get closest to the date of our second snow win!
For the second week in a row, rather quiet and warm late-summer (and dare we say…early fall) conditions with exist across the Front Range. We’ve only got one slight chance of rain to talk about. Otherwise, we’ll see drought conditions worsen and wildfire smoke linger across the area.
With the exception of a weak cool front around midweek, it’s all about a high pressure ridge that will keep us warmer than average and dry with virtually no clouds until the weekend. We are also keeping an eye on the wildfire smoke over the Pacific Northwest and discuss when it may return.
What an absolutely incredible week of weather we experienced across the Front Range. From sizzling record heat, to explosive wildfire growth with towering pyrocumulus clouds blocking out the sun and ash raining from the sky, to unprecedented early season snowfall, to eventual record cold. This week had it ALL! Let’s step through this crazy week in weather and look at just how many long-standing records we broke over the last several days.
