On this first full week of September, an overall dry pattern will exist across the Front Range with plenty of sunshine to go around. The best chance of storms will be during this Labor Day with a strong cold front moving east, though we suspect almost all of the action will be well north of the Denver Metro area. Tuesday will see temperatures drop pleasantly into the 70s behind a cold front, but it will be a short reprieve as above normal temperatures regain control in the days to follow.

A very typical, though somewhat boring late-summer week will unfold across the Front Range as the monsoon wraps up and we await the seasonal arrival of the polar jet stream. Our best chance of rain this week comes immediately on Monday as afternoon thunderstorms rock the area. Drier and hot weather will return in the days to follow, however. Late-season monsoon moisture will reach the area Friday into the upcoming weekend, but the heat will be going nowhere.
The week commences on the hot and dry side as a very strong and anomalous ridge over the central United States keeps much of Colorado locked into a scorching heatwave. Remnants from a tropical cyclone over the western Gulf of Mexico may influence our region later in the week as it interacts with a southward moving cold front. This should favor cooler temperatures and increasing chances for thunderstorms by the latter part of the week into the weekend. Read on for all the details of yet another semi-active weather week for us.
The week begins on the cooler side, but don’t be fooled! Hot weather, including potential record-breaking heat, is lurking right around the corner as temperatures return to the 90s by Tuesday and stay there the rest of the week. Rainfall will also be hard to come by during this toasty stretch. Let’s take a look at the hot and dry weather week ahead…
The week ahead will remain somewhat cooler and drier than normal as a weak trough stays entrenched and monsoon moisture continues to be difficult to come by. However, a favorable setup for severe thunderstorms will exist across northeast Colorado early in the week with hail the main risk. Overall temperatures will stay mostly below normal in the days ahead but they will trend back towards 90 degrees by week’s end.
After a hot and somewhat dry last week or so, monsoon season rapidly ramps up this week across Colorado! Deep and anomalous subtropical moisture will surge into the area potentially reaching record levels which will carry the threat of flash flooding across the Front Range. By the latter part of the week, there are some signs that the ridge may move northwestward, possibly pushing the deepest monsoonal flow to our north aiding in some drying. Nevertheless, showers and storms will exist in the forecast every single day this week, especially Monday through Wednesday when flash flooding will be a major concern. Let’s discuss this wet setup!
An anomalously hot ridge will remain over the region through the week favoring above normal temperatures in the 90s each day, with the hottest stretch coming the first few days of the work week. We likely won’t reach any record highs but will get close! Come mid to late-week, the ridge will edge a tad southward allowing monsoonal moisture to become further entrenched across the Front Range. This uptick in moisture will increase our chances of late-day showers and storms and cool temperatures by several degrees.
The weather this week in the Front Range will have two contrasting primary themes. A heat dome cooking beneath a large ridge of high pressure off to our southwest will push temperatures towards record highs Monday and Tuesday. However, the rest of the week will exhibit a cooling trend with increasing chances for late-day thunderstorms as several backdoor cold fronts team up with increasing monsoonal moisture. Yes, the famed monsoon season is about to commence! In typical fashion though, there will also be a risk of some severe weather mixed in.
