May 2023 dumped more than five inches of rain on Boulder and concluded as the 11th wettest May since the late 1800s. Though there were no exceptionally warm days, the month did see an above normal mean temperature, breaking a streak of cold months stretching back to November. Other monthly headlines included multiple severe weather outbreaks and of course the thick wildfire smoke from Canada which created days of degraded air quality. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during May and how it relates to climatology.

No snow yet this month & we're not seeing much evidence to support a deep/cold enough storm system in the extended pipeline for (very) late-season lowland snowflakes. However, accumulating snow in May has happened in #Boulder 16 out of the last 22 years, so you never know! #COwx pic.twitter.com/v2GJVzGFku

Sorry, this is a long update….but we've got two rounds of severe weather in the near-term pipeline, and a heap of rain after that.
⛈️ Severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night, but are much more likely Wednesday afternoon: https://t.co/ce9RurKRC4 #COwx #colorado

Wednesday: This is an extremely rare occurrence to have this level of severe weather risk this far westward into the terrain. We really can’t remember seeing "Slight Risk" this far west in the last five years or more #COwx Please correct us if that is not accurate! pic.twitter.com/OUTk5jm6Tu

💥 Right on schedule storms are starting to pop around Boulder! Probably going to be quite stormy around here the next hour or three. Enjoy the fireworks. Hail is likely! Damaging hail possible! #COWx #Boulder #Boulderwx pic.twitter.com/NGbpGKAnUd

RAIN & SNOW OUTLOOK: The heaviest rain is expected to fall Thursday, but rain sticks around through the night well into Friday. The greatest risk for stream/urban flooding is in the southeast side of the Metro area. Plan for winter driving conditions in the Mountains! #COWx pic.twitter.com/wvRUD9oyM3

📡 12:50PM Radar Update: Gulf moisture continues to unleash on Colorado this afternoon with widespread moderate rainfall in the Front Range & t-storms out east, including some tornadic. 72-hour rainfall totals show anywhere from 1 to 6" of rain has fallen across the Front Range, the biggest single storm total since the 2013 Colorado Flood in many locations. Goodbye, drought! Don't let the minor floodwaters hit you on the way out! 🥳 pic.twitter.com/nqrtGBJAcD

Still waiting on the exact rainfall total for #Boulder, but it should come in around 2.5" which is far from historic for the city. While it was our largest 3-day precipitation event in 6 years, it didn't even crack the top 50 all-time list. Color us disappointed! #COwx pic.twitter.com/VobkF6zgTo

🚗🏔️ If you are looking for clean air to breath today, you need to head west and beyond the Eisenhower Tunnel. We've already seen some of the smoke make it over the Divide near Winter Park, so things may worsen past the tunnel as well through the day. Good luck! #COWx #Smoke pic.twitter.com/icbrR6hw5T
