Our weather will shift sharply colder for Friday as two systems merge across eastern Colorado bringing a chance of rain and snow to the area. Upslope will be marginal and favor areas south and west of Denver, mainly in the Foothills. However, there is still some hope for light accumulations in Boulder and Denver, too. An unsettled weather pattern the last few weeks has brought heavy snow to the Mountains and a couple of decent snow events to the Denver Metro area as well. We’re now starting to get back on-track for snow. However, the week ahead will be mild and sunny for the most part, but we are watching a system set to move in on Friday for cooler temperatures and a chance of light snow.
After a surprisingly warm Friday, temperatures cool off for the weekend as our next weak storm system arrives from the northwest. The main impact will be light Mountain snow, but there’s also a brief chance of snow in portions of the Metro area Saturday afternoon and evening. Let’s take a look.
2021 was a diverse year in Colorado weather which isn’t out of the ordinary. However, 2021 definitely upped the ante a bit. The year began quite cold and wet but had a prolonged warm and parched finish. We saw the widespread drought get abolished at one point and then promptly get reinstated. Months of poor air quality from distant (and some close) wildfires characterized the summer season — not the monsoon. And of course, everything culminated in a devastating and fiery ending just before the New Year. We made 14 unique graphics that together characterize only a small slice 2021’s weather in Boulder. More snow is on the way to the Front Range for midweek, but it comes with strong winds beforehand. An Arctic front will slam the area on Wednesday bringing a rapid drop in temperatures alongside some moderate to heavy bands of snow across the entire area. We discuss how strong the winds will be, when the frigid airmass and snow will arrive, and how much snow will pile up.

Happy New Year! After a welcomed snowstorm to end 2021, 2022 starts out somewhat quiet with temperatures close to seasonal normals. That, however, changes abruptly come Tuesday with another windy day followed by unsettled, cold, and wintry conditions beginning midweek. Our next snow event is taking shape for Wednesday evening into Thursday favoring potential banded snowfall, though it may end up too far north. We discuss all of this, as well as when we might expect to see warmer weather return.
