Wednesday Update: A potentially devastating late-season winter storm is looming — here’s the latest

Just when it seemed we had the shortest snow season and earliest last snowfall records in the bag, Mother Nature is about to throw a late-spring wrench into the forecast! A winter storm is heading for Colorado and it will bring snow to everyone Friday into Saturday even across the lower elevations in Boulder and Denver. While the Foothills communities should brace for a major damaging snow event, some crucial aspects of the forecast remain fuzzy which has allowed only low confidence in the exact snow amounts for the immediate Metro area. Let’s take a look at the latest details and go over our preliminary snowfall expectations and impacts.

The week ahead will have a little bit of everything across the Front Range! Each day through midweek will offer late-day chances of spotty thunderstorms — some of which could turn severe east of Denver. We are watching a potential storm around the Friday timeframe. Once again it looks to offer wind and elevated fire danger, but sadly little in the way of precipitation. Read on for our full outlook of the weather week ahead.

The last month has been very dry across the Denver Metro area with the progress we’ve made this year towards eradicating the drought starting to reverse. Wind and high fire danger have been rampant of late and that isn’t going to change this week, though it won’t be nearly as bad as recent times. Temperatures will be up and down through the days ahead, but prospects for any precipitation remain woefully slim.

A strong storm system in the Pacific Northwest will intensify as it moves into the upper Great Plains and into Minnesota by midweek. This system will create periods of gusty winds, fire weather concerns, and frequent temperature swings for the Front Range, as well as heavy snowfall for the High Country. The same system may bring a few rain/snow showers Tuesday into Wednesday to the Denver Metro area, but these won’t amount to much. Read on for more details.
