Storm Recap: The spring-like storm in December that unexpectedly dumped up to foot of wet snow

Well, there’s no possible way of sugar-coating things here — our snowfall forecast for this one ended up being WAY off. Though hopefully our in-depth discussions beforehand stressed that the exact outcome of this specific snow event was much more uncertain than usual. Heck we even called out this forecast as being “a bit like playing a drunken game of darts”. We’ll first take a look at the regional snowfall totals, discuss what went wrong with the forecast and dive into what made this incredible moisture-infused spring-like storm so difficult to predict in the middle of winter.

This Week in Colorado Weather: December 11, 2022 (Updated)

A strong and slow-moving winter storm takes aim on Colorado late Monday night and through Tuesday. The system will bring snowfall, gusty winds, and colder temperatures to the Front Range. The greatest impacts will be felt east of the Denver Metro where blizzard conditions will exist over northeast Colorado. After a mild day to start our week on Monday, below normal temperatures in the 30s will persist through the rest of the week, with perhaps an intrusion of Arctic air in the extended outlook. Read on for the latest on potential snowfall amounts and a look at just how cold it will get this week.

This Week in Colorado Weather: October 31, 2022

Warm temperatures will be the story through midweek in the 60s to near 70 degrees with a ridge of high pressure slowly sliding eastward, including picture-perfect conditions for Halloween evening festivities. However, the pattern shifts much colder and potentially snowy late Thursday into Friday. There remains considerable model uncertainty right now but there are definitely good chances for snow later in the week. Stay tuned and read on for more details.

This Week in Colorado Weather: October 24, 2022

Following the active day of weather in Colorado on Sunday — from thunderstorm to snow to blowing dust — things quiet down to begin the week. However, it won’t remain that way for too long! Our next storm system will approach mid-week bringing a chance of rain and possibly accumulating snow to the Denver Metro area. The Mountains will likely pick up another round of powder as well.  Let’s take a look at the weather week ahead for the Front Range.

Winter Weather Update: Big changes on the way including heavy Mountain snow & dangerous fire conditions on the Plains

The run of beautifully warm autumn days is about to end with our first major storm of the season heading towards Colorado! It will bring a slew of impactful weather Sunday into Monday, including heavy mountain snow, dangerous fire conditions, blowing dust, strong downslope winds, and a chance of the first snowflakes of the season in the Denver area. Cooler weather & maybe snow in the extended forecast, plus the entries to our 2022 First Snowfall Contest!

Thanks to everyone that entered our 2022 First Snowfall Contest. We briefly review the entries which actually trend towards a later date than Boulder’s climatology would suggest. We may not have to wait too long for a winner as cooler weather and maybe a few snowflakes are brewing in the extended forecast. This week in Colorado weather: January 10, 2022

An unsettled weather pattern the last few weeks has brought heavy snow to the Mountains and a couple of decent snow events to the Denver Metro area as well. We’re now starting to get back on-track for snow. However, the week ahead will be mild and sunny for the most part, but we are watching a system set to move in on Friday for cooler temperatures and a chance of light snow.
