This Week in Colorado Weather: October 24, 2022

Following the active day of weather in Colorado on Sunday — from thunderstorm to snow to blowing dust — things quiet down to begin the week. However, it won’t remain that way for too long! Our next storm system will approach mid-week bringing a chance of rain and possibly accumulating snow to the Denver Metro area. The Mountains will likely pick up another round of powder as well.  Let’s take a look at the weather week ahead for the Front Range.

Winter Weather Update: Big changes on the way including heavy Mountain snow & dangerous fire conditions on the Plains

The run of beautifully warm autumn days is about to end with our first major storm of the season heading towards Colorado! It will bring a slew of impactful weather Sunday into Monday, including heavy mountain snow, dangerous fire conditions, blowing dust, strong downslope winds, and a chance of the first snowflakes of the season in the Denver area. We discuss the latest on the incoming storm and who will see which flavors of crazy weather over the next 36 hours.

Cooler weather & maybe snow in the extended forecast, plus the entries to our 2022 First Snowfall Contest!

Thanks to everyone that entered our 2022 First Snowfall Contest. We briefly review the entries which actually trend towards a later date than Boulder’s climatology would suggest. We may not have to wait too long for a winner as cooler weather and maybe a few snowflakes are brewing in the extended forecast. Contest prizes and recognition will be awarded in the days following our first dumping of snow — big or small!

This week in Colorado weather: January 10, 2022

An unsettled weather pattern the last few weeks has brought heavy snow to the Mountains and a couple of decent snow events to the Denver Metro area as well. We’re now starting to get back on-track for snow. However, the week ahead will be mild and sunny for the most part, but we are watching a system set to move in on Friday for cooler temperatures and a chance of light snow.

Winter Weather Update: Bursts of moderate snow & tumbling temperatures for Wednesday (Updated Snow Map)

More snow is on the way to the Front Range for midweek, but it comes with strong winds beforehand. An Arctic front will slam the area on Wednesday bringing a rapid drop in temperatures alongside some moderate to heavy bands of snow across the entire area. We discuss how strong the winds will be, when the frigid airmass and snow will arrive, and how much snow will pile up.

Winter Weather Update: The first snowstorm & coldest air of the season are coming just in time for New Year’s Eve!

Hooray! The New Year’s Eve snow event is confirmed and whether you like it or not is coming in on the higher-end of initial predictions as models continue to slow the storm down and usher in the bitter cold air to the Front Range. How much snow are we expecting? Will New Year’s Eve travel be significantly impacted? And how cold will it get? We have a lot to discuss so let’s get right into it!

An atmospheric river event will bury the Mountains in holiday snow! There’s also a non-zero chance of snow in Boulder

We review the climatology of White Christmas conditions in Boulder, including a discussion on why Christmas Day has the second highest occurrence of snow on ground out of the entire year. We also discuss the upcoming pattern shift which will favor widespread snowfall in the Mountains and maybe a little white stuff in Boulder, too.
