June 2021 began as one of the hottest and driest on record for the area, but ended on a cool and rainy note! Other weather highlights during the month included a slew of new wildfires across the Western Slope, a highly photogenic landspout tornado, multiple heatwaves, and poor air quality from near and distant wildfires. Here’s a quick and colorful recap of our weather during June and how it relates to climatology.

Unseasonably cool temperatures will exist on Monday following a cold front and upslope flow. However, the heat and smoke return on Tuesday and will stay with us most of the week ahead. We’re also watching the potential for a much-needed wet conclusion to the week.
As the heatwave reaches peak intensity on Wednesday, Boulder is well-positioned to obliterate the existing daily record high temperature for the date, maybe even before the lunch hour! However, increasing smoke from distant wildfires, more widespread clouds and outflows from developing showers could keep the city from hitting the elusive century mark. We review the climatology of rare triple digit heat, discuss why Denver is often several degrees warmer than Boulder on days like this, and take a look ahead to when the heat will end.
After a bitter cold stretch under the fringes of the Polar Vortex, a “relative” warming trend develops this week but we still remain largely below average. By mid-week a cold front will bring the return of light snow to the area. Week’s end may turn breezy and finally near normal with potential Chinook winds developing. Let’s dig into the details.
October 2020 checked most of the weather boxes, with record warmth, persistent drought, a dumping of snow, explosive wildfire growth, a dust storm, freezing drizzle, and historic cold. Here’s a quick and colorful rundown of our weather during October and how it relates to climatology.
November will commence with very warm and dry conditions across the Front Range as high pressure dominates our weather for yet another week. Afternoon temperatures each day will approach (but likely not exceed) record values. Changes begin to take shape Friday into the upcoming weekend as a strong and cold storm system drops out of western Canada. Initially this will lead to strong winds and high fire danger for Colorado, but snow may be in the works as well.
Winter weather is right around the corner for northern Colorado with two storm systems set to impact the area in the coming days. The first will produce freezing drizzle and light snow Thursday night, while the second will usher in bitter cold temperatures and accumulating snow for Sunday and Monday. We discuss both storms and give our initial thoughts on potential snowfall accumulations for the weekend.
After an eventful weekend with two new wildfires igniting in Boulder County, the weather will become slightly less favorable for fire growth through the week in the higher terrain. Across the Plains, it will be mainly dry this week, but there are changes queuing up for the late-week period into the weekend including the potential for our first snowfall since early September!
