We’ve got a quick forecast update for you on this beautiful Friday afternoon. You probably have heard already, but it appears that snow will make a return to the Front Range next week— perhaps even in the form of a monster snowstorm if we play our cards right. Let’s take a look at this admittedly still uncertain forecast and what could potentially transpire next week across the area.

A strong low pressure system passing to our north will wrap in a potent jet stream to northern Colorado in the coming days. This will result in a period of Mountain snow, but to the east several days of strong downslope winds and high fire danger for the lower elevations. Though the weather pattern remained fairly active and snowy, March 2022 broke the short streak of months with above average precipitation in Boulder. The NCAR Fire, which sparked on the 26th, somewhat curbed the community’s positivity about the improving drought situation since the New Year. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during March and how it relates to climatology.
2021 was a diverse year in Colorado weather which isn’t out of the ordinary. However, 2021 definitely upped the ante a bit. The year began quite cold and wet but had a prolonged warm and parched finish. We saw the widespread drought get abolished at one point and then promptly get reinstated. Months of poor air quality from distant (and some close) wildfires characterized the summer season — not the monsoon. And of course, everything culminated in a devastating and fiery ending just before the New Year. We made 14 unique graphics that together characterize only a small slice 2021’s weather in Boulder. Happy New Year! After a welcomed snowstorm to end 2021, 2022 starts out somewhat quiet with temperatures close to seasonal normals. That, however, changes abruptly come Tuesday with another windy day followed by unsettled, cold, and wintry conditions beginning midweek. Our next snow event is taking shape for Wednesday evening into Thursday favoring potential banded snowfall, though it may end up too far north. We discuss all of this, as well as when we might expect to see warmer weather return.
Our state has benefited greatly from the recent atmospheric river event with snowpack thankfully getting back close to normal for now. However, things remain dreadfully dry east of the Continental Divide. The week ahead will offer generally cooler than normal temperatures across the Denver area with continued Mountain snowfall really piling up. We are also tracking a potential Arctic outbreak and some snow just in time to ring in the New Year. Here’s the latest.
