The tide may finally be starting to turn with the ongoing drought it seems. January 2022 was one of Boulder’s snowiest with two and a half feet of snowfall reported during the month. It was also the first month to conclude with colder than normal temperatures since May of last year. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during January and how it relates to climatology.

It’s already been Boulder’s snowiest January since 2014, but we’ll add to it on Thursday with another round of light snow moving into the area. We discuss the setup, timing, commute impacts and the expected snowfall amounts for the Front Range.

Moderate to heavy snow arrived to the Denver Metro area right on-schedule Tuesday making for a messy morning commute. While most of us received our allocated amount of snowfall, localized ridiculous totals were observed in far eastern Colorado on Tuesday — up to 30″ in some cases near the Kansas border. This region was expecting much less snow than this which created a dangerous situation for livestock and on the roadways. We review the storm totals and discuss why this historic snow fell in that region.
After the recent freezing drizzle event that glazed the entire area in ice, our attention quickly turns to an approaching winter storm that will bring a round of snow to the area on Friday. We discuss the setup, timing and expected snowfall amounts in what will be an all-snow upslope event for mainly the western Denver Metro area.

Our weather will shift sharply colder for Friday as two systems merge across eastern Colorado bringing a chance of rain and snow to the area. Upslope will be marginal and favor areas south and west of Denver, mainly in the Foothills. However, there is still some hope for light accumulations in Boulder and Denver, too. Let’s take a look at the timing of things, the potential impacts, and our regional snowfall forecast map.
2021 was a diverse year in Colorado weather which isn’t out of the ordinary. However, 2021 definitely upped the ante a bit. The year began quite cold and wet but had a prolonged warm and parched finish. We saw the widespread drought get abolished at one point and then promptly get reinstated. Months of poor air quality from distant (and some close) wildfires characterized the summer season — not the monsoon. And of course, everything culminated in a devastating and fiery ending just before the New Year. We made 14 unique graphics that together characterize only a small slice 2021’s weather in Boulder.
