The sun is out but temperatures are way below zero this Thursday morning! Here’s a few highlights from the ongoing Arctic blast as snow wraps up and a slow warming trend begins across the Front Range.

❄️ Front Range snowfall totals definitely came in on the low side with this event, but it was still a good storm for the northwest Metro area. Officially, 6.7″ of snow fell in Boulder and 1.1″ in Denver. Shown below is our snowfall forecast map issued Tuesday evening with actual storm totals overlaid. Green values indicate that our forecast verified to within one inch of the observed snowfall total. Red numbers did not.

👎 Several cities actually received what we would consider the “absolute lowest” amount of snowfall possible from this storm, while others came out as expected

📊 This storm has now widened Boulder’s seasonal snowfall lead over Denver to more than 2 FEET

📈 Boulder’s seasonal snowfall continues to track well above normal, now sitting 17″ above the long-term median for this point in the season

☃️ The snow ratio from this event was LOWER than expected thanks to the very cold air. 6.7″ of snow that fell in Boulder contained approximately 0.54″ of water equating to a snow ratio of ~12:1

🥧 Another midweek snowstorm is in the books! For this snow event, 6.1″ went to Wednesday  and 0.6″ went into Thursday for Boulder. Those two days of the week now account for precisely two-thirds of the snowfall this season. Saturday still remains snowless….

🥶 With the snow ending and skies clearing overnight, Boulder absolutely obliterated the 124-year-old record low temperature for February 23rd Thursday morning bottoming out at -13°F. The previous record was -5°F from 1899.

🧊 Thursday morning’s bitter cold is extremely rare for this late in the winter season. The temperature in Boulder has only been colder than -12°F after February 12th twice in the last 125 years: TODAY and on March 9, 1932!

🌨 And just for fun, here’s a look at heavy snow falling in Boulder Wednesday early evening when the ambient temperature was a bone-chilling 4°F!

After another chance of snow on Thursday, warmer weather lies ahead (eventually)…. enjoy!
