Thanks to everyone that entered our 2021 First Snow Contest. We briefly review the entries which actually trend towards an earlier date than Boulder’s climatology would suggest. Congratulations to the winners of the BoulderCAST 2020 “Second” Snowfall Contest!

If you recall, Mother Nature threw a greasy wrench into our usual “First Snow” contest this year, delivering the earliest ever snowfall in Boulder’s history before we even announced the annual contest! But the show must go on, and this year predictions surrounded the date and amount of Boulder’s second snowfall of the season. With that having now come and gone this week, it’s time to announce the winners of the contest!

The wait is over…PowderCAST is back!

There may not be much white stuff in the High Country yet, at least the real stuff, but we are picking up a little bit of snow headed to Colorado’s mountains this weekend! This is great news, as many local ski resorts will be opening up in the coming weeks, with or without Mother Nature’s cooperation. If you aren’t aware, we offer a suite of ski forecast products powered by machine learning called PowderCAST. Read on to learn more and get a jump start on the first “POW day” of the season, whenever that may be!

We provide a brief overview of Boulder’s early season snowfall climatology, discuss the snowfall outlook for the next week or two, and then pose a question…“When will Boulder’s SECOND measurable snow occur this year?” Submit your guess for a chance to win an assortment of prizes. It’s OUR birthday: Five years down, here’s to many more!

It’s hard to believe that it has been five full-years since we began the BoulderCAST journey. We’ve come a long way since, transitioning from an idea envisioned by a few CU-Boulder grad students and alumni…to becoming a leader in Boulder and Denver weather that members of our community depend on today. While an anniversary is a great time to reflect on what we have accomplished already, we’re also looking ahead to the future.
