The highly anticipated first snowfall of the season is now out of the way for everyone in the Front Range with a widespread blanket of snow having dumped on the area Saturday evening and overnight. Light snow continues to fall Sunday morning, but most of the accumulation is over and done with. Though things didn’t go perfectly as planned, snowfall amounts came in about as expected across the Boulder-Denver Metro area with a range of 3 to 12″. Let’s take a look at the totals and near-term forecast. We also announce the (many) winners of our 2023 First Snowfall Contest.

The potent winter storm is moving into Colorado as we speak. We’ve got just a quick update for you this morning as models remain shockingly consistent placing the bullseye of heavy snow directly on the Denver Metro area. We discuss the latest timing on the heaviest snow bands, expected travel impacts, and provide our final prediction on snowfall amounts. Spoiler alert: they have gone up a tad!
It’s been over six months now, but winter weather is finally set to return to the Front Range this weekend as the coldest air of the season shows up alongside several inches of fluffy snow. An interesting weather setup will have a stalled jet streak directly over Colorado Saturday evening seeding a lengthy period of scattered heavy snow bands. Snowfall amounts, while still somewhat uncertain, have trended upward and some of us could see up to a foot of snow this weekend! Read on for our latest thoughts on the storm, including when the heaviest snow will be around, how much accumulation to expect and just how cold it will get. Change is on the way! Unseasonably warm temperatures will continue across the Front Range for a few more days leading up to a significant pattern shift later this week. A series of cold fronts will impact the area in the days to come, knocking our high temperatures from the 80s on Monday into the 40s by Friday, though precipitation looks scant during this timeframe. However, the first Arctic blast of the season is taking shape for the upcoming weekend with temperatures set to plummet further alongside our first potential snowfall of the season. It’s about time!
After enduring three consecutive La Niña winters, El Niño has taken over the globe once again intensifying in unusually rapid fashion. As of writing in mid-October, a strong El Niño is underway with impacts that will stretch globally in the months to come.
