This week in weather: September 4, 2018

A persistent trough of low pressure across the southwestern United States will keep the area cooler than normal through the week alongside the chance of scattered storms each day. However, the weekend looks warmer and certainly drier. We also briefly touch on the tropics across the Atlantic with two potential hurricanes in play.

This week in weather: August 27, 2018

Monsoon moisture is making its annual retreat back into northwestern Mexico. When this happens, we look to the mid-latitude storm track to begin providing “weather” to Colorado again through the autumn season. Unfortunately, the storm track remains well to our north right now, so prepare for a generally quiet week ahead.

What a wonderfully cool day we had on Sunday. Cooler weather continues early in the week, along with the increase in monsoonal moisture as the week progresses. Warmth and drier conditions take hold later in the week setting the stage for what looks to be a great weekend. We also detail the wildfire smoke situation and provide an outlook on when the smoke may clear out.

This is why Colorado’s historically warm summer has cooled off

Not long ago, 2018 was in the running with 2012 for the hottest summer on record for many Front Range cities. However, a subtle but crucial pattern shift has kept our temperatures on the cool side for the last three weeks, knocking this summer back to a status closer to normal. We discuss this shift and provide an update on our summer forecasting contest which wraps up at the end of the month.
