A recap of this week’s “double shot” of severe weather, more large hail possible on Friday

It’s been a busy weather-week to say the least….There is usually only one or two days per year where a significant severe weather outbreak impacts the immediate Metro area. It just so happens this year those two days of severe weather occurred back-to-back! We review the damaging hailstorms that transpired earlier in the week and also look ahead to Friday’s forecast which may have large hail returning to the Boulder/Denver area.

This week in weather: June 18, 2018

Despite the first day of summer arriving on Thursday, it sure feels like mid-spring! Temperatures have dropped into the middle 50’s with low clouds, drizzle, and fog hanging around as of Monday morning. A frontal boundary has backed into northeast Colorado and will be major player in a wet start to our week, along with the potential for severe weather as well. We do have a few dry days in the extended forecast, however.

Flash flooding possible in coming days as tropical moisture descends on our region

Today was the 17th consecutive day of above average temperatures and dry conditions in Boulder and Denver. It’s about time for a change…don’t you think? Several atmospheric ingredients will be coming together over the next several days to bring cloud cover, much cooler temperatures, and the potential for significant rainfall to the state of Colorado. The atmospheric moisture content statewide will be close to all-time record levels for the month of June. With so much moisture involved, some areas could see heavy rainfall capable of producing flash flooding. A brief reprieve from the heat will begin our week thanks to a cold frontal passage. Unfortunately, it won’t last long with temperatures quickly returning back into the 90’s. This week in weather: June 4, 2018

The weather pattern for the week ahead will exhibit shades of the middle of summer with a ridge of high pressure parked across the south-central United States. As a result, temperatures in the Metro area will soar into the 90’s with only limited chances for rainfall through the week. This forecast doesn’t bode well for the meager snowpack remaining across the High Country.
