After a somewhat surprising urban flood scenario in Boulder on Sunday, smoky air and a heatwave will again be the forecast headlines this week for the Front Range as a strong ridge of high pressure develops just to our north and east. High temperatures will remain in the 90’s through Friday with just meager late-week rain chances. With a staggering number of large wildfires burning upstream, smoke will stay the course this week as well. Read on for our complete forecast of the week ahead.

For the upcoming week, smoke and heat will be the main forecast challenges for the period through Friday. A potent ridge of high pressure will largely remain situated over Utah and Colorado, keeping us in a continued hot and dry pattern. Monsoon moisture will return to the area briefly during the middle of the week and also into the weekend, resulting in some storm chances. Read on for our full forecast below.
As of Monday morning, thick smoke from numerous large wildfires blankets the Front Range and this will remain the case through much of the week ahead. There will be some improvement in the smoke as monsoonal moisture returns in the coming days alongside late-day storm chances. Let’s run through the weather of the next ten days or so for the Denver Metro area.
This week will feature a rollercoaster ride in temperatures from heat to more seasonal temperatures to even below normal conditions. The best chance of storms will be early in the week with flash flooding possible in the burn scars. Drier weather follows in the extended, however. June 2021 began as one of the hottest and driest on record for the area, but ended on a cool and rainy note! Other weather highlights during the month included a slew of new wildfires across the Western Slope, a highly photogenic landspout tornado, multiple heatwaves, and poor air quality from near and distant wildfires. Unseasonably cool temperatures will exist on Monday following a cold front and upslope flow. However, the heat and smoke return on Tuesday and will stay with us most of the week ahead. We’re also watching the potential for a much-needed wet conclusion to the week.
As the heatwave reaches peak intensity on Wednesday, Boulder is well-positioned to obliterate the existing daily record high temperature for the date, maybe even before the lunch hour! However, increasing smoke from distant wildfires, more widespread clouds and outflows from developing showers could keep the city from hitting the elusive century mark. We review the climatology of rare triple digit heat, discuss why Denver is often several degrees warmer than Boulder on days like this, and take a look ahead to when the heat will end.
After a bitter cold stretch under the fringes of the Polar Vortex, a “relative” warming trend develops this week but we still remain largely below average. By mid-week a cold front will bring the return of light snow to the area. Week’s end may turn breezy and finally near normal with potential Chinook winds developing. Let’s dig into the details.
