Smokeggedon? The motherlode of wildfire smoke is roaring towards Denver!

Sure…it has been fairly smoky already this week across our area, but it’s about to get a whole lot worse! An extremely smoke-laden airmass is poised to invade the entire state of Colorado late Friday night. The cause? An upstream low pressure system has been hard at work gathering up literally ALL the smoke from massive wildfires burning in California, the Pacific Northwest and southern British Columbia…and guess what? That low pressure system is headed our way!

July 2021 Weather Review: Boulder somehow squeaked out a wet month as the monsoon largely avoided the Denver area

During July 2021, the summer monsoon pattern tended to favor areas further west with persistent high pressure holding over Colorado. Despite this, with a little luck involved, Boulder managed to notch a Top 20 wettest July, while most of the Front Range was very dry. Other weather highlights during the month included persistent smoke from new fires burning in the Pacific Northwest, multiple bouts of triple-digit heat, highly localized flooding in portions of Boulder, and frequent mudslides across the Mountains which has left Interstate 70 indefinitely closed near Glenwood Springs. This week in Colorado weather: August 2, 2021

This week for the Front Range will feature thunderstorm chances early in the week followed by dry and hot weather for the latter portion. Flash flooding remains a concern through Tuesday, especially for the burn scars, as slow storm motions and monsoonal moisture team up. Very smoky conditions will persist through Wednesday, but some improvement in air quality should develop later in the week. Let’s take a look.

This week in Colorado weather: July 26, 2021

After a somewhat surprising urban flood scenario in Boulder on Sunday, smoky air and a heatwave will again be the forecast headlines this week for the Front Range as a strong ridge of high pressure develops just to our north and east. High temperatures will remain in the 90’s through Friday with just meager late-week rain chances. This week in Colorado weather: July 19, 2021

For the upcoming week, smoke and heat will be the main forecast challenges for the period through Friday. A potent ridge of high pressure will largely remain situated over Utah and Colorado, keeping us in a continued hot and dry pattern. Monsoon moisture will return to the area briefly during the middle of the week and also into the weekend, resulting in some storm chances. Read on for our full forecast below.

This week will feature a rollercoaster ride in temperatures from heat to more seasonal temperatures to even below normal conditions.
