Unfortunately, the hottest temperatures thus far still lie ahead on Thursday alongside elevated fire danger. The end is in sight though — two cold fronts bring a taste of autumn this weekend. We discuss how hot it will get Thursday, the timing of the big changes, and just how chilly it will be this weekend.

The ongoing brutal heatwave will continue for Labor Day and through the first full week of September. A strong and anomalous ridge parks itself over the Utah region through Thursday resulting in hot and dry weather in the 90s across the Denver area. Record highs are likely under this setup and we may even see some triple digits at times as well. The light at the end of the tunnel is a welcomed cold front currently scheduled to arrive on Friday.
August 2022 followed the trend of the rest of the summer as another hot and somewhat dry month across the Front Range. August began very warm, cooled off around the middle of the month as monsoon moisture surged, and finally once again turned toasty by months’ end. July 2022, a month that falls in the heart of monsoon season, ended up fairly hot and dry across much of the Front Range as a ridge of high pressure dominated our weather. Raindrops were a frequent occurrence, at least in Boulder, but ultimately they didn’t add up to much. A wave of thunderstorms towards the latter part of the month provided soaking rains to much of the Denver area, “saving”many locations from worsening drought for the time being. After one of the driest starts to the summer monsoon season on record across the Front Range, things have started to change somewhat following a surge of monsoon rainfall in the final days of July. The best chance of rain comes on Tuesday, but we also are watching the upcoming weekend when the remnant tropical moisture from Hurricane Frank reaches the area. On a day which should have been slightly cooler than recent times on paper, Boulder officially reached 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon. However, other reliable weather sensors around the city came in several degrees cooler and more in-line with forecasts. We take a look at the temperatures measured around the area and weight on what will ultimately go down in the books as a record high temperature and the city’s first triple-digit reading in over two years.
