This week in Colorado weather: February 28, 2022

If last week was considered the winter deep freeze, this week shall be the spring thaw! The main story for the majority of the week ahead will be above normal high temperatures and dry conditions under a strong mid-level ridge of high pressure. A storm system moving onshore along the West Coast on Thursday will return our area to a more unsettled pattern late Friday into the weekend, along with a likelihood of snow and colder air filtering in. This week in Colorado weather: February 21, 2022

The upcoming week will feature a drastic change in our weather as a late-season Arctic airmass surges in on Monday and remains locked across the Front Range through at least Friday. Alongside the bitter cold temperatures will be a handful of light snow chances from President’s Day Monday through Wednesday night that will bring a wide range in potential snowfall totals. We’re expecting the highest amounts in and near the Foothills, including Boulder. Read on for the full details on what is surely to be a frigid and snowy week ahead.

Storm Recap: It just keeps on snowing! Plus more on the way early next week…

The incredibly snowy start to 2022 continued with yet another snowstorm across the Front Range last evening. The storm played out as we expected with up to 10″ of snow falling in some locations. Let’s take a look at both the storm and seasonal snowfall totals and the current status of the drought. We also peek ahead to the next Arctic blast targeting Colorado early next week.

January 2022 Graphical Weather Review: The cold & snow (i.e winter) finally made an appearance!

The tide may finally be starting to turn with the ongoing drought it seems. January 2022 was one of Boulder’s snowiest with two and a half feet of snowfall reported during the month. It was also the first month to conclude with colder than normal temperatures since May of last year. The snowiest January since 2014 has put a “normal” snow season back within reach as drought conditions improve

Adding in the few inches that fell on Thursday, Boulder has now notched nearly two feet of snowfall in the month of January, the most since 2014. This recent snow event was just one of many small winter storms to impact the Front Range in the weeks following the devastating Marshall Fire. Colorado has seen slight drought improvement, but there is definitely much more needed. In this update we discuss the recent snow totals, how January as a whole is shaping up, the locations that are seeing drought conditions improve, why La Niña will make further recovery more challenging and much more.

Boulder Colorado’s 2021 weather told through 14 colorful graphics!

2021 was a diverse year in Colorado weather which isn’t out of the ordinary. However, 2021 definitely upped the ante a bit. The year began quite cold and wet but had a prolonged warm and parched finish. We saw the widespread drought get abolished at one point and then promptly get reinstated. Months of poor air quality from distant (and some close) wildfires characterized the summer season — not the monsoon. And of course, everything culminated in a devastating and fiery ending just before the New Year. We made 14 unique graphics that together characterize only a small slice 2021’s weather in Boulder.
