April 2023 concluded as Boulder’s sixth consecutive month with below normal temperatures. At the same time, the Front Range area saw below normal snowfall and precipitation leading to increased drought coverage, though a soggy conclusion to the month did help things a bit. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during April and how it relates to climatology.

78" of snow so far this season in Boulder, which is about 4" below normal. In a typical year there would only be about 3" of additional snow after April 20th, though we all know the highly non-scientific "Mother's Day Rule"…. ❄️🥀 #COwx #Boulder #Boulderwx pic.twitter.com/KW9ypTpNEW

Huge dry slot over #Boulder and the Foothills right now as a persistent Denver Cyclone setup near DIA to the east has been spoiling the party. It seems to be collapsing which should lead to a better surge of moisture/upslope westward, but this definitely cut into QPF output #COwx pic.twitter.com/Pv24EHduN4

Overall a good albeit easy forecast for the lower elevations (which we knew would be too warm for snow), but it was a disaster in the most of the higher terrain.
It wasn't just the Front Range that got short-changed. The Palmer Divide and Colorado Springs did as well #COwx pic.twitter.com/Wkq8kl74pJ

🌡️💦Another spring storm infused with moisture and warm air! Snow accumulations were confined to the Foothills, up to 6" in some cases.
Moisture totals ranged from around 0.1" up north to 0.5" in the south. #COwx pic.twitter.com/3wC2OMyhep
