Early-season Arctic outbreak produced a foot of snow and historic cold

From start to finish, the early season Arctic airmass which overtook eastern Colorado this week has been truly remarkable! The prolonged period of fluffy snow and historically cold temperatures may not be matched the rest of this winter. We take a look back at the wild ride Mother Nature took us on over the last five days and check the snow totals from the second snow event wrapping up Wednesday morning.

Was Monday really the hottest September day ever in Boulder? 

Labor Day 2019 was Denver’s first 100-degree day ever to occur in September. It was also the latest 100-degree day observed, remarkably by more than two full weeks. The previous record high for September 2nd was 95 degrees. On Monday, this temperature was eclipsed before the lunch hour, with the prior record eventually being obliterated by 5 degrees later in the afternoon. The city of Boulder officially hit the century mark on Monday, too. The extreme heat had impressive historical significance here as well, with one small asterisk. Unlike Denver, Boulder actually only tied all of the existing records, as 100 degrees had already been observed on the very same day back in 1983. We investigate the validity of the triple digit observation this week and the one more than three decades ago.

August 2019 Outlook: A lingering monsoon and not too hot

It’s hard to believe that August is now upon us! Where is the summer going? June and the first half of July were cooler than normal with summer barely making an appearance. The heat has really ramped up over the last three weeks though, including a ten-day stretch of 90-degree weather in Boulder. Should we expect more of the same in August? Read on as we examine Boulder’s climatology and consider the current state of the atmosphere to give our outlook for the next month.
