October 2022 Graphical Weather Review: Not as bone-dry as last October, but still dry & warm overall

October 2022 was yet another warm and dry month for the Front Range as drought expanded across the state and our precipitation deficit for 2022 grew further. Denver and Boulder both saw later than normal first snowfalls and first freezes. There were no major heatwaves or cold snaps to speak of during the month either. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during October and how it relates to climatology.

Storm Recap: Boulder officially recorded its first accumulating snow of the season on Thursday….but it was only 0.1″

Much-needed rain and snow fell across the Front Range on Thursday as a quick-moving storm raced across the state. Though temperatures remained entirely above freezing in Boulder and Denver, some embedded heavier pockets of snow allowed for minor accumulations to occur on the grass in spots, including at the official climate station in Boulder. This made for an interesting but somewhat underwhelming first snowfall of the season for many. We recap the storm, take a look at the snowfall totals across the region, announce the plethora of winners to our 2022 First Snowfall Contest, and look ahead to our next chance of snow.

September 2022 Graphical Weather Review: Record late-season heat, somewhat dry, plenty of displaced smoke, and no snow

September 2022 followed the trend of the rest of the summer as another hot and somewhat dry month across the Front Range. The month entertained one of the longest and most intense heatwaves for so late in the season. Rainfall was below normal and there was no snow during the month. Smoke from out of state wildfires was also a theme at times. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during September and how it relates to climatology.

Forecast Update: The September heatwave culminates to 100° Thursday before a major cooldown ensues

The extreme heatwave unfolding across the West continues in full-force for one more day in Colorado. Unfortunately, the hottest temperatures thus far still lie ahead on Thursday alongside elevated fire danger. The end is in sight though — two cold fronts bring a taste of autumn this weekend. This Week in Colorado Weather: September 5, 2022

The ongoing brutal heatwave will continue for Labor Day and through the first full week of September. A strong and anomalous ridge parks itself over the Utah region through Thursday resulting in hot and dry weather in the 90s across the Denver area. Record highs are likely under this setup and we may even see some triple digits at times as well. The light at the end of the tunnel is a welcomed cold front currently scheduled to arrive on Friday.

August 2022 Graphical Weather Review: A continuation of what has been a hot & somewhat dry summer

August 2022 followed the trend of the rest of the summer as another hot and somewhat dry month across the Front Range. August began very warm, cooled off around the middle of the month as monsoon moisture surged, and finally once again turned toasty by months’ end. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during August and how it relates to climatology.

Monsoon Update: Heavy rainfall earlier this week put a dent in the drought as monsoon season nears completion

After several dry summers in a row, the 2022 monsoon season has been a breath of fresh air for most of the Front Range, thanks mainly to the recent soggy weather culminating in localized flash flooding earlier this week.  As monsoon season begins to wind down across Colorado, we discuss the recent and seasonal rainfall totals, why this year’s monsoon has been atypical, and how climate change may impact future monsoons.

July 2022 Graphical Weather Review: Many rounds of raindrops, but not much rain!

July 2022, a month that falls in the heart of monsoon season, ended up fairly hot and dry across much of the Front Range as a ridge of high pressure dominated our weather. Raindrops were a frequent occurrence, at least in Boulder, but ultimately they didn’t add up to much. A wave of thunderstorms towards the latter part of the month provided soaking rains to much of the Denver area, “saving”many locations from worsening drought for the time being. Here’s a quick and colorful graphical recap of our weather during July and how it relates to climatology.
