What’s October like in Boulder?

September was exceedingly dry and warm across much of eastern Colorado. Consequentially, the wildfire threat is increasing with each passing day. More than half of Boulder County is now under a complete fire ban. Will October offer up the soaking rain and mountain snow that we desperately need? The weather this August has been very mundane, compliments of a pesky ridge of high pressure which has held its ground across the American Southwest. As a result, August was characterized by beautiful weather, albeit hot. The monsoon plume has largely been confined to Arizona, Utah, and western parts of Colorado, keeping the Front Range relatively parched the past month. Will this trend continue into September? Read on as we examine Boulder’s climatology and consider the current state of the atmosphere to give our outlook for next month.

The weather across our region has been relatively uneventful over the course of the last month, with much of the West sitting beneath a broad, upper-level ridge and monsoon moisture hard to come by. That changes this week! The week ahead will showcase a, dare we say, (early) fall-like weather feature that will bring a big cool down and a good chance of rain (and possibly severe weather) to Boulder County. An update on Colorado’s paltry 2015 wildfire season

To suggest that the 2012 wildfire season in Colorado was utterly devastating would be an understatement. Nearly a quarter million acres were charred, more than 600 homes damaged, and at least 35,000 people were evacuated statewide. This year, the narrative is much different. We provide an update on the 2015 fire season so far and discuss the forecast heading forward.
