In general, temperature decreases with altitude in the atmosphere. You can easily prove this to yourself by leaving Denver on a warm summer afternoon and driving one hour west to the summit of Mount Evans. The summit lies above 14,000 feet elevation (+9,000 above Denver). The temperature may have been 95 degrees in Denver. On top of Evans, it will be in the 40's!
