Though 2019 is only half over, it’s already been a very busy year for our team! In this post, we discuss some of the changes and new additions to BoulderCAST that have taken place so far this year.
Recently added or updated
- January 2019: Monthly Front Range Weather Learning & Quizzes (mostly Premium Only)
- On roughly a monthly basis, we do a deep-dive into a specific weather topic and provide a challenging quiz question related to the topic
- January 2019: Installed a PM 2.5 Air Quality sensor at BoulderCAST Station.
- The data was made available on our site
- Read our exciting announcement post about the sensor HERE
- March 2019: We solidifed our new partnership with CU Boulder to provide weather forecasting consulting
- Read our complete announcement post HERE, including an interview with campus officials on how they deal with extreme weather on campus and how they are using our services.
- They were glad to have our expertise when the strongest winter storm in Colorado’s history impacted the area in mid-March!
- April 2019: Added the fish-eye sky camera owned by CU-Boulder’s ATOC Department to our Webcams page, along with an overlay from our in-house cloud mask algorithm and a cloud cover time series
- April 2019: HRRR Model Viewer updated (currently Premium Only)
- Now displays all 36 forecast hours (was 18 hours)
- CAPE added as a new forecast parameter
- April 2019: GFS/NAM Model Viewer additions
- Added model forecast soundings (skew-T’s) and hodographs for Boulder and Denver
- June 2019: Added full support for NOAA’s next-generation GFS-FV3 model site-wide
- After a lengthy delay due to data validity concerns (which we personally still have!), NOAA operationally made a hard cut-over to the new model in June which required us to update many products on the site to support new higher-resolution data and meteorological parameters.
- From an end-user perspective, you shouldn’t notice any changes. We do find that GFS temperature forecasts for our area are now less accurate, but that is something we hope to address in the future.
That’s all we have to cover for now. Thank you for reading!
