It’s hard to believe that it has been five full-years since we began the BoulderCAST journey. We’ve come a long way since, transitioning from an idea envisioned by a few CU-Boulder grad students and alumni…to becoming a leader in Boulder and Denver weather that members of our community depend on today. While an anniversary is a great time to reflect on what we have accomplished already, we’re also looking ahead to the future.

It seems like just yesterday we were writing our inaugural forecast for a magnificent El Niño Four Corners low back in April of 2015. Initially we set out with a mission to provide the best forecasts available for the city of Boulder and surrounding communities. By-and-large, we have far surpassed this preliminary goal, now entertaining a large and passionate audience of weather enthusiasts from all around Boulder and Denver, and even many folks from neighboring states. From our personalized weather blog content to our unique real-time automated forecasts, BoulderCAST offers a little something for everyone with an interest in our complex local weather or the Colorado outdoors.

We wanted to say THANK YOU. Thanks to all of you that have read our forecasts over the years. Thanks to those of you that have helped spread the word about our site. Thanks to the many that support us, not only through a Premium subscription, but also through sincere emails and comments expressing your appreciation for our work. Thank you for being the inspiration for why we do what we do here at BoulderCAST!

Here are a few fun factoids about the last five years:

  • We’ve published 1975 individual posts, just a shade more than an average of one per day.
  • We have forecasted for 473 inches of snow in Boulder. Our forecasts were correct to within one inch 83% of the time (73 out of 89 snowstorms).
  • Our data servers have cumulatively processed somewhere between 400 and 500 TB (terabytes!) of data to create all of the site’s forecast graphics and services over the years.
  • We have sent out more than 5 million email notifications for our posts.
  • Our single most viewed article of all-time to this day remains our special on the 2013 Flood, Four Years and Three Billion Dollars Later.
  • Hands down, our favorite storm to forecast so far was the historic April 2016 snowstorm. It’s rare that we get to predict 30-50″ of snow with absolutely no hesitations!

Over the course of those three years, we’ve regularly added new features to the site, many of which were requested by you, our awesome users. Here’s a brief look at some of the milestones for BoulderCAST in the last sixty months:

It should be no surprise, but several more fun forecasting ideas are already in the works. We’re also in the midst of orchestrating a handful of local partnerships with pieces of the Boulder community. We will certainly talk more about these soon. We hope you are as excited about the future as we are!
